Spike

6 weeks ago we were asked to take Spike in and find him a forever home. This is no mean feat as a 21 year old tortoise who could outlive everyone. And with the winter approaching, Spike would be looking to hibernate  and how do you re-home an animal and explain to his adopters that you will probably not see again for 2months soon. It was going to be a tricky rehoming.

As with every animal that comes through our door, we don't settle for just any home and, while we did have some initial potential interest in Spike, we weren't planning on looking for a home for him until he had his long nap and would woken up again! But along came Jules!

Jules is an amazing supporter of the GalwaySPCA and is, single handedly, keeping our small animal food bill low by donating bags of high quality hay every month! Hay makes up over 80% of most of our small animals diets, so it's a massive help! Jules is affectionately known as the Bird lady, due to her love of all things avian and, truth be told, it was our resident Quaker Pippy that she had popped into our small animal room to say hi too. When we drew her attention to the rather impatient Spike, who was trying his best to get out for his afternoon walk, it was love at first sight (well she had fallen in love with hi after his first post, and it didn't take much persuasion to talk Jules into "fostering" Spike but by the time we had gone through everything regarding what we had planned for his hibernation and gotten him and his belongings packed up, it was adoption papers not foster papers. And we couldn't be happier for both Spike and Jules!
With an African grey, budgies and Bunnies, Jules is already very familiar with our exotic vet Lindsay Cox and also with the commitment and cost involved in owning exotics, she has also previous experience with tortoises, just not her own but it has always been a dream of hers.
Spike, as you can see, is very much at home and is getting the very best of everything he could want including outdoor time (which he loves!!) In return, Spike has made sure to inspect every inch of Jules home and is very quick to highlight the areas she is failing to dust properly.
Thank you Jules for opening your home to our cheeky and lovable Spike and we are absolutely loving the updates.
