Late one evening a lady spotted a lone dog just standing in the middle of the road in Athenry, looking very lost and confused. Thankfully, this lady was an avid dog lover, has a Galway SPCA doggie, and so she knew she couldn't just ignore him. He trotted up to her and into her home, heading straight for the comfy bed she had made up for him.
The next day this young, handsome greyhound x boy arrived at Heathlawn. We named him Banksy and settled him in.
From day 1 Banksy was the perfect gent and one of the easiest, gentlest boys who quickly became a firm favourite with staff, volunteers and our other dogs. So easy that we posted him for rehoming quite quickly and kept everything crossed that he would find his home here in Ireland instead of having to rely on either the UK or Italy, as many hounds do.
The evening his rehoming post was done we received an adoption application from two ladies we have grown to know well over the years. Halina and Rain adopted their first lurcher Julian from us many years previously and then in 2017 they adopted another lurcher Mr. Bojangles who sadly passed away a few months ago leaving a hound shaped hole on their sofa and in their hearts.
It's never an easy decision for some people to bring another dog into their broken hearts after losing one but we always say what better way to honour your passed dog than to give their space and your love to a new dog in their memory. It's what they would want and that's exactly what Halina and Rain have done.
Banksy is now living the dream life in Co Mayo, living beside the mountains, being loved and cherished as those dogs who went before him were. We hear that Banksy has settled in beautifully and adapted to home living as though he was born into it.
His story could have been so different if it wasn't for Flavia who first spotted him and brought him to safety. To our dedicated kennel team who gave Banksy the hope of better days. And to two amazing ladies, Halina and Rain, who, once again, have opened up their hearts and home to yet another Galway SPCA hound. We wish you all many happy years together.
