Late last Thursday our Kennel Manager began to receive calls about a "Lurcher type" dog running on the road near Ballinasloe Golf Club, too scared to allow those who tried to catch him. With no known location a dog in flight mode and heavy fog it would be a wasted journey so, as always, we sit tight and pray that the dog in question will stay safe and alive.
Early Friday morning she received a call from a man who had woken up that morning to find an exhausted, freezing, trembling dog lying on his doormat. We asked for the location and a photo and instantly knew it was the dog from the night before. So our team set the wheels in motion to bring this poor dog to safety thanks to Tor who diverted her original journey.
We are used to picking up all breeds of dogs from the streets and bog in Ballinasloe and especially Lurchers so we assumed this would be just another in a very long line. But there was a huge difference because this dog turned out to be a Tattoed Greyhound. And the difference is huge because, unlike their cousins the Lurchers, these beautiful, gentle souls are "meant" to have an "industry" looking out for them.
An "industry" who received €19.82 million of tax payers money in 2025.
An "industry" that tells us they have tracing and accountability on all registered Greyhounds.
An "industry" that continues to tell us they care.
If all the above were true then why are rescues all over Ireland constantly picking up the pieces of an "industry" that is clearly not doing their job and who continue to cover up the many cracks, meaning dog after dog is let down with many simply disappearing off the radar and no-one bothers to find out why or how??
Mirror is 3 years old. She is sweet and gentle, kind and forgiving. She arrived covered in fleas and with sores on her legs, feet and body. She had no traceability, no accountability and until they read this post, the "industry" that is paid and supposed to protect her will have no idea she is with us or how she arrived into rescue because she is still registered to a Greyhound Trainer in Co Clare.
"We love our dogs" is a claim we are sure many of you have heard from certain corners when it comes to Greyhounds, We, at GalwaySPCA, honour that promise because those who should Do Not!!
