Last week two of our team were in Galway City checking on some dogs when they decided to pop into the City Pound to take photos of some Lurchers we had been asked to help when spaces came up. Somewhat safe in the knowledge that with no spare kennels they couldn't take any dogs that day no matter what they saw😪. Every rescuer knows this is an impossible feat and it proved too much for our hardened team.
But you also can't let your heart rule your head and while we had to ignore the eyes of the bigger breeds that day we just couldn't ignore the teeny tiny 8 week pup that had been found thrown out under a bush a few days earlier. A pound is no place for such a tiny, tiny baby. The problem was that this tiny one was sharing with another tiny little dog and, while they weren't a bonded pair, we just couldn't close the kennel door on the little Chihuahua girl who pleaded with us to take her too.
Pulling from the pound is never easy but you have to take what you can accommodate on that day and for us it really was none but we also knew that we could find a foster for the pup and definitely squeeze in such a tiny Chihuahua. We will and do take the bigger breeds too, just not that day.
The tiny little Chihuahua girl, Chiquita was found straying around Galway City, very underweight and scared. From the moment we saw this little one we just knew she needed to be rescued.
Chiquita is approximately 8/9 months old and she slotted into our sanctuary the moment we took her off our van, making friends with Palm and Roly, making friends with all the humans and just being so grateful to have been given a chance.
Yesterday Chiquita joined her friends Palm and Roly on a little trip into town to see how she would be out and about.
A dream! She loved the walk, she passed cars, bikes and other dogs and just wanted to embrace everything and everyone who crossed her path.
Chiquita is looking for her forever home. Humans that will bring her into the comfort of their home, life and arms, who will give her all the things she never had before. She travels in the car, walks well on the lead and is very nearly house trained.
She would love a home with or without another dog, a home where she will have people around a lot though can be left for a few hours, a home where she will be brought on walks and adventures. A fully secure garden is a must.
